lthough my parents were happy to welcome my sister into the world, in 1943 the world was at war.

The United States entered World War II in December, 1941, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. A year and a half later, my father was drafted.

He closed his office, and on August 30th, 1943, seven months after the birth of his daughter, he left for basic training.
