hat sparked the artistic spirit in my father?

I'm inclined to believe that it may have developed from his playfulness. Play has always been a way for people to stretch limits and reconstruct the world in inventive ways, which is the essence of art.

I have included the sports and physical activities he participated in—which I refer to as "Athleticism"—under the category of Art, although it doen't fit into the classic Renaissance conception of Art. I don't think there would be much argument today that the physical expression of athletes is artistic. It certainly embodies the fundamental element of "play" in artistry.

Although he was always taking pictures of people, some of his best photographs are panoramas. His favorite photographic style was time exposure, leaving the aperture open for several minutes at night or as dawn appoached to see what images the play of light produced.

His writing consisted of newspaper articles, speeches, short stories, Christmas, birthday, anniversary and Valentine's Day poetry.

His interest in language arts extended beyond his writing, however. He was fluent in a number of foreign languages and was an effective public speaker.

At the end of his life, he began to cultivate an art that was rooted in his youth: cooking. He was developing into a skilled dessert chef.
