Minnie Webber was an extremely fair-skinned, young black woman with freckles and auburn hair, who, at five-feet-seven inches, was three inches taller than him. She was friendly, down to earth, and had a manner that put him at ease. While he was talking to her, her older sisterwhom Minnie was staying witharrived. My father was surprised to find out that he knew Minnie's sister, Mae. She had been a nurse in training at Harlem Hospital, while he was interning there. When he returned to his friends' apartment they asked him what he thought of Minnie. He responded, "She's all right, but she's too tall!" Her height, however, did not prevent him from asking her to the movies, to a few dances, and to a night club, before she returned to South Carolina two months later.
