His first year in New Haven was challenging, financially, as well as professionally. He made $800. The second year, however, he more than doubled his income to $1800, and he doubled that figure the third year, bringing in $3600.

Slowly, he was beginning to make money, acquaintances and friends. Carter Marshall, George Crawford, Ed Smith, and Harold Fleming were some of the blacks in New Haven who welcomed him, making him feel a part of the community.

Although he made progress in many areas, during his early years in New Haven, his marriage languished to the point of dissolution. He and Chubby divorced in 1937.

Even though it was an amicable breakup, my father was upset and depressed for awhile.


Sometimes, it was hard to find a smile.
